When you bring up unions around software developers you usually don't have to look very far to find someone who thinks that unions are just a mechanism for keeping the unskilled harder to fire which takes away money from the actually good engineers. Maybe that was the case once upon a time when software developers were scarce, but those days seem to be over.
I read this post the other day by a recently laid off software engineer and she lamented the power of capitalism and its ability to destroy her life casually and the word "union" doesn't appear once in the entire piece. I was surprised, because the answer seems so obvious to me, we need unions.
